What billing software has to do
A charger sends the platform how much energy it delivered, when and with which card. Everything after that is billing, and it has five parts:
- A price for each session: per kWh, per hour, per session, or a mix; maybe different for each customer group or each hour of the day.
- Getting paid: by card on the spot, or added to a monthly invoice for a company account.
- Splitting the money when the charger sits on someone else's land: the site owner gets a share.
- The paperwork: invoices and receipts that are valid where you operate.
- Knowing your margin: what you charged, minus what the electricity cost you and the payment fees.
Tariffs
- Per kWh, per hour, per session or combined (for example €0.35/kWh plus €1 per session), or free.
- Prices that change with the time of day: you write the time bands (cheaper at night, a weekend price), in your local time.
- Your energy cost plus a margin, worked out band by band from the meter readings, not at the price of the hour the session ended.
- Day-ahead market price plus a margin for the bidding zones we can publish (Spain and several in Central Europe), for operators who charge in euros.
- One price per customer group, or per individual customer: staff free, residents at cost, visitors at the public price, on the same charger.
Getting paid
- QR payment without an app or account. A hold when the session starts, the exact amount captured when it ends. If a long session costs more than the hold, the difference is recorded so it isn't lost.
- The money goes to your own Stripe account, not to ours. Gateway: 2% + €0.25 per payment, Stripe's fee included.
- Monthly invoices for companies and fleets on the 1st, with every session, charged to the saved card if there is one.
- Prepaid balance for customers who pay by bank transfer: the charger only starts if there is balance, and stops itself when it runs out (OCPP 1.6 for now).
- Revenue share with the site owner, as a percentage.
- Charge your own customers a subscription if you resell the platform: your prices, your brand.
- Roaming through the askacharge.com hub: drivers from other operators charge on your chargers and the hub settles with you on the 1st of each month, with a 1% fee.
Invoices that are valid where you are
In Spain, every QR payment and every monthly invoice is registered automatically with the tax office: Verifactu (State tax agency) or TicketBAI (Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba), depending on where the operator is registered. Outside Spain, invoices carry your tax label and rate; filing is yours. Prices and invoices go out in your currency (euros, dollars, Canadian dollars, Colombian pesos…).
Your margin, per session and per charger
Each session stores what you charged, what the electricity cost you, the payment fee and what's left. Add what each charger cost to buy and install, and the platform tells you when it paid for itself — the real date, not a projection — and, separately, when it is expected to at the current pace. Sessions export to CSV or Excel for your accountant.
What it costs
- Software: €20/month ($20 in the US and Mexico), unlimited chargers, all features. 30 days free, no card, no contract.
- 0% of the energy you sell. No per-session software fee.
- Card payments: 2% + €0.25 each, only if you take them.
- Managed hosting €15/month and your own domain €5/month are optional. Full price list.
What it doesn't do (yet)
- No idle fee for a car left plugged in after it finishes charging.
- No tax filing outside Spain. Invoices carry your tax details; the returns are yours.
- No card payments in Colombia or Chile: Stripe Connect doesn't operate there. Prepaid balance by transfer works instead.
- No native driver app. Drivers use a web page that can be installed on the phone; the QR payment needs nothing.
It works with any charger that speaks OCPP 1.6J or 2.0.1. What a charge point management system does beyond billing.
