Electromaps alternative: who owns the driver when they plug into your charger

Electromaps is the best-known charging app in Spain and, as part of the Wallbox group, also offers operators Electromaps Manager to run their chargers. It is a sensible choice if what you want is to be on its map. The question is whose customer the driver is when they plug in.

What Electromaps does well

Electromaps has what no small CSMS can build: a large base of drivers who already have its app installed and use it to find where to charge. Listing your charger on its map gives it visibility from day one; it accepts any OCPP charger, lets you set tariffs, and takes care of charging the driver and paying you each month. For a business that wants nothing to do with software and just wants the charger "on the map", it works.

Where the model changes the numbers

The difference is who owns the relationship with the driver. In the Electromaps model, the driver starts your charger with the Electromaps app or key fob, pays Electromaps, and Electromaps pays you. Your charger is one more point in its network. The price of the operator service isn't published; you ask its sales team.

With askacharge.com the charger is really yours: your brand, your tariff, your driver portal with your logo, and the money from each payment goes to your Stripe account, not an intermediary's. The software costs €20/month with unlimited chargers, published, and driver payments 2% + €0.25 per charge with everything included. And you can still be on the Electromaps map or any other app: that is what OCPI 2.2 roaming is for, and it comes included.

In Spain it isn't a detail: Verifactu and TicketBAI

Every payment from a driver is a simplified invoice that has to be registered: with Verifactu at the Spanish tax agency and, in Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba, with the TicketBAI signature. Platforms not born in Spain usually solve it with an external tax tool — another vendor, another cost — or don't. In askacharge.com the tax record is generated on every transaction, with retries and an alert if something fails.

The honest trade-offs

We are a small company and support is by email, with no call centre; there is no native driver app; and our roaming hub has no external partner connected yet, so being on other apps' maps goes through OCPI with each of them. If what you need is Electromaps' audience tomorrow morning, Electromaps gives you that and we don't.

When to choose each

Before you switch: three checks

  1. Can your chargers change server? Standard OCPP chargers let you edit the central system URL (manufacturer's app, the charger's web page, or an OCPP ChangeConfiguration from the current platform). If it is locked, get it unlocked in writing before you cancel anything. How to change the OCPP server URL, by brand.
  2. Export what you own while you still have access: RFID cards, tariffs, customers and session history.
  3. Move one charger first. Do a full cycle on the new platform — start, charge, pay, invoice — and only then move the rest. Cancel the old subscription last.
