What happens
The transaction is open but power is zero, and the connector shows SuspendedEV or SuspendedEVSE. Both mean “paused”, but they point at different places: EV is the car and EVSE is the charger.
Check it in two minutes
On the test server you see the status changes and every minute's meter values: if the connector goes to SuspendedEV with power offered, it's the car; if it goes to SuspendedEVSE, check what limit the charger has. Open the OCPP test server →
The causes, most likely first
1. SuspendedEV: the battery is full or at its limit
The charger offers energy and the car doesn't take it. Most often: the car has reached its charge limit (80%, say) or is full.
How to fix it: Check the charge limit in the car's app or screen.
2. SuspendedEV: the car has a scheduled charge
Many cars only charge at their scheduled time. You plug in at six in the evening and the car waits for the early hours.
How to fix it: Remove the car's schedule or let the charger do it, not both.
3. SuspendedEVSE: a power limit below the minimum
A charging profile, load sharing between chargers or the site's supply limit leaves less than the car needs to start (about 6 A per phase). The charger pauses instead of charging half-way.
How to fix it: Check the charger's charging profiles and the site's power limits.
4. SuspendedEVSE: solar mode waiting for surplus
If the charger only charges from solar surplus, without enough sun it stays paused.
How to fix it: Check the charging mode or set a grid minimum.
5. SuspendedEVSE: the authorisation was not accepted
Some chargers open the transaction and keep it paused if the answer to the card is not Accepted.
How to fix it: See how the platform answered the card at the start.
What askacharge.com does
Location limits and solar charging rules are SuspendedEVSE's own causes: if you have them, that's the first place to look. In Real-time you see each hose's power and amps per phase.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between SuspendedEV and SuspendedEVSE?
SuspendedEV: the charger offers energy and the car doesn't take it (battery full, a limit or a schedule in the car). SuspendedEVSE: the charger isn't offering energy (power limit, charging profile, solar mode).
Why does the charger stay in SuspendedEVSE with a low limit?
Because a car won't charge with less than about 6 A per phase. If the limit leaves less, the charger pauses the session instead of supplying a current the car wouldn't accept.
